This fantastic example of early Kentucky portrait painting deserves its rightful place in the Kentucky gallery. This is a straightforward treatment that involves the removal of a decades-old resin-based varnish, as well as many, many black fly specks. Yuck! It’s gross but necessary. There are a few areas of mismatched retouching, where someone went in years ago and tried to freshen up a few areas along the seams of the panel, but this painting has been left alone over the centuries, which bodes well for a full treatment in the laboratory, and a significantly improved appearance.
