This gripping documentary traces the meteoric rise of The Gits and their magnetic frontwoman\, Louisville’s Mia Zapata — whose fearless voice and raw presence left an indelible mark on the Seattle music scene before her life was tragically cut short in 1993. \nFeaturing electrifying live performances\, rare archival footage\, and candid interviews with bandmates\, peers\, and friends like Joan Jett\, Kathleen Hanna\, members of 7 Year Bitch and more\, The Gits delivers an intimate and unflinching portrait of a band whose sound captured both ferocity and vulnerability. Rather than framing Zapata solely as a tragic figure\, the film celebrates her as a visionary artist whose voice still resonates more than three decades later. \nWith amplified visuals\, rare audio\, and a renewed urgency in its message\, The Gits is more than a documentary—it’s a timeless testament to artistic legacy\, community\, and resilience. 2005/2025\, U.S.\, DCP\, 79 minutes. \nCo-presented with WFPK. Participants will explore the rich tradition of assemblage art within Black American visual culture\, rooted in the spiritual and artistic legacies of the Bakongo people of Central Africa.\n\nThe session will begin with a brief lecture introducing the concept of Minkisi (sacred vessels) and their cultural transformations within African American communities—specifically focusing on the practice of Memory Jug making in the Black South. A memory jug is a commemorative vessel created to honor a departed loved one. In the early 1900s\, memory jugs were commonly found attached to grave markers throughout the South. \n\nThis workshop serves as a thematic continuation of the three-day performance series Future Histories of Emancipation\, created by contemporary assemblage artist Vanessa German\, whose work will be highlighted as a modern-day inheritance of the Bakongo legacy.  The performance series\, held in October 2025\, acted as ceremonial ritual to honor the Black girls enrolled in the Colored Girls Dormitory of 1896 at the Louisville Industrial School Reform. This building is currently Gottschalk Hall at the University of Louisville.\n\nThis workshop is created and facilitated by Sirene Martin\, Assistant Curator and Repatriation Coordinator\, in conjunction with the Sam Gilliam Visiting Artist Program at the Speed Art Museum.  No experience is required; materials are provided. \n\n \n\nMemory Jar\nUnidentified American Maker\, Rome\, Georgia\nearly twentieth century\nHand-built clay with encrusted ceramic shards and found objects\nHigh Museum of Art\n1997.37\n\n\n\n\nI Will Not Suffer For You\nVanessa German\n2017\nFound object mixed media assemblage\n70 x 44 x 6” URL:https://www.speedmuseum.org/event/sam-gilliam-visiting-artist-program-adult-workshop/ CATEGORIES:Sam Gilliam Visiting Artist Program,Workshops ATTACH;FMTTYPE=image/png:https://www.speedmuseum.org/wp-content/uploads/image.png END:VEVENT BEGIN:VEVENT DTSTART;TZID=America/Kentucky/Louisville:20260117T140000 DTEND;TZID=America/Kentucky/Louisville:20260117T150000 DTSTAMP:20260106T214726 CREATED:20251008T222536Z LAST-MODIFIED:20251120T204613Z UID:10002005-1768658400-1768662000@www.speedmuseum.org SUMMARY:Speed Chat Spot | Otherworldly Journeys - The Fantastical Worlds of Bosch and Bruegel DESCRIPTION:Check out Speed Chat Spots.
